PreS-Gr 2–When a little elf named Oli finds a small blue pebble that is rather pleasant, he decides to keep it and goes about his day. As he wanders into other denizens of his home, he is told repeatedly to give up the pebble and start searching for useful objects instead. Oli holds onto his pebble, certain that he will need it later. Later comes when he stumbles across a young human girl who is being told to give up something that she treasures. Balpe has created a lovely tale about the importance of treasuring oneself and one’s treasures, but to also think about how to care for others. As Oli discovers how important his pebble is, so too do the readers. It is a simple, yet beautiful world that Balpe has created and that Bishop has wonderfully translated. Oli’s world is further developed through Tharlet’s detailed and whimsical illustrations that capture the characters’ emotions perfectly. They also help to physically show Oli’s journey and to peek ahead, or behind, the path Oli is taking. This is a tale of treasures and heart that is sure to brighten any reader’s day.
VERDICT A lovely tale of thinking ahead and sharing that demonstrates the importance of believing in oneself
