Gr 2-5–Soccer gets a lovely, lively, and thorough treatment in this oversize book. The text includes a brief overview of soccer basics and terms, followed by a surprisingly in-depth history of the game. A time line features regional details and cultural changes that contributed to the evolution of soccer. The U.S. Women’s National Team is recognized as one of the greatest teams of all time. Many of the key players who transformed the U.S. team into a powerhouse are mentioned in different sections, such as “The Great Players” and “Weird and Wonderful.” Sections highlighting outstanding coaches, massive stadiums, rad uniforms (or kits as they’re more commonly known), and the envy-inspiring trophies are equally well developed. The “How To…” section is a standout. It offers step-by-step guidance through the most amazing moves in the game, like David Beckham’s awe-inspiring set pieces, Luis Suárez’s jaw-dropping nutmegs, and Didier Drogba’s shockingly effective headers. A segment toward the end is dedicated to sportsmanship, coaching kids on the importance of respecting the officials, and being a responsible fan on game day. The playful art contains amusing visual details.
