PreS—These two oversize board books focus on feelings. Large, colorful illustrations highlight the themes and capture their moods. The first book features both children and animals doing things to make themselves happy. "Fish are happy/when they are/swimming./I am happy/when I am/splashing!" "Owls are happy/ when they are hooting./I am happy/when I am/singing." Simple, engaging illustrations clue children in on vocabulary terms being used such as
nibbling and
munching. In
The Big Book of Silly, various animals are shown doing nutty things. For example, the end of the book portrays a large pink flamingo, one thin leg bent at the knee, wearing cowboy boots. One little penguin perches on her blue boot. On the next page, it gets even sillier, with 12 penguins now balancing on the flamingo's back. Simple text makes these titles accessible for storytimes, preschool classrooms, or reading at home.
VERDICT Excellent additions to a public library early literacy collection, these books are also a plus for professional collections for librarians and preschool teachers.
