K-Gr 2—Lovely, full-color illustrations enhance this simple introduction to brown bears. Sections cover how bears spend their day, what they eat, how they are born, and who are their "enemies." The portion describing hibernation is somewhat outdated, as it makes no mention of torpor. However, the author uses terms such as plantigrade and omnivore to good effect. In addition to brown bears, six other species are shown with their Latin name along with what continent(s) they populate. A rudimentary map conveys the brown bears' range.
VERDICT Although this title is pleasing to look at, consider only as an additional purchase for already strong animal collections.
