Gr 9 Up—Impressive and powerful immediately come to mind when describing this film. A rock solid ensemble of famous and well-educated spokespeople share their stories with recovering alcoholics and addicts, who are equally passionate, if not as articulate. All of them, from author William Moyers to former NBA star Chris Herren and author/actress Kristen Johnston, tell moving stories about their addiction and recovery. The overall message is that sometimes silence and anonymity may be a hindrance in addressing the massive problem of addiction in this country. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is rooted in the idea that anonymity is the spiritual foundation of recovery. While this video makes an excellent case that sometimes being "out" about personal recovery is more important, it does so with great respect for the history and success of AA. There are real eye-opening accounts here. The film makes telling arguments for speaking out to combat the stigma and shame of addiction, and the success rates when recovery is overseen in correctional facilities and through supporting services in schools and colleges are impressive. Teachers and students will be inspired. The killer soundtrack is a bonus.—John R. Clark, Hartland Public Library, ME
