PreS-Gr 2—These rereleased videos are based on Doreen Cronin's picture books Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Fly. Three creepy crawlies share their life experiences in journal format. Each short, lighthearted episode focuses on friendship and family. Despite differences, relationships remain solid. In Worm, the audience learns that Spider isn't a natural digger like Worm, even after the lessons he receives from his friend—and forget about Worm learning to walk upside down! The illustrations stress the perspective of the storyteller of the episode. Viewers will get a deeper appreciation of how these titles were developed in a bonus interview with illustrator Harry Bliss, who discusses how he researched and developed a viewpoint for each of the friends. He also encourages children to write and illustrate their own books.
VERDICT S Fans of Cronin's work will enjoy this compilation. The interview with Bliss will inspire young authors and illustrators.
