Gr 1–3—In this warmhearted beginning reader, best buddies Tugg, a lovable gorilla, and Teeny, an eager monkey, help a sad hippo find her self-esteem, a rhinoceros locate his missing horn, and avoid making their friends angry when Teeny leaves wet, violet-colored paint on the picnic-table bench prior to a neighborhood party. The lively illustrations are saturated with color and surrounded by abundant white space.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI
In three episodic chapters, Teeny, a monkey, and Tugg, a gorilla, demonstrate true friendship with their jungle neighbors: they cheer up a self-conscious hippo who thinks she's fat, help a dejected rhino find his lost horn, and invite everyone to a potluck for Good Neighbor Day. The resolutions are underwhelming, but soft illustrations of animals in their jungle setting are amiable.
