PreS-Gr 2—For young children with a "sick" stuffed animal and/or those who dream of being a veterinarian when they grow up, this adorable book explains how to minister to the maladies, injuries, and "owies" of stuffed animals. Kids will enjoy the fun crafts, such as how to make a pretend lab coat, thermometer, and stethoscope, as well as the directions for creating settings like a pharmacy (complete with fun suggestions, including using goldfish crackers for pills) and a recovery room. There are also instructions on role-playing (how to give a check-up, how to diagnose illnesses). "Ask the Vet" asides answer questions such as "Why do real vets wear lab coats and scrubs?" and "Why is temperature important?" Stickers and cutout templates for signs or pretend animal collars may make this title less than suitable for circulation.
VERDICT Though the novelty elements may limit circulation, this is a good resource for imaginative play programs.
