Gr 6—10—After defeating the tyrant Prince Thidrek and returning Thor's Hammer in Shield of Odin (HarperCollins/Laura Geringer Books, 2008; Recorded Books, 2009), Dane the Defiant and his friends are off on another epic adventure in the second book (HarperCollins, 2009) in the series by James Jennewein and Tom Parker. A partial rune-sword was left for him by Dane's father, and is said to lead to the greatest treasure of the gods. Such an artifact is highly coveted, and it isn't long before the sword is stolen and Dane's mother kidnapped along with it. Now Dane and company must battle all manner of obstacles to rescue her and prevent her kidnapper from obtaining a treasure that would make him dangerously powerful. Also returning is narrator Richard Poe, who again brings his talents to Dane's world. Poe's solid, engaging narration is well-suited to this action-driven tale. Subtle changes in his voice give the different characters added personality and help make them unique. Though a sequel, the story can stand alone and will likely appeal to listeners who enjoy fantasy with plenty of humor and action.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL
