Gr 6-8–A new series in the Faery Rebels realm, this is the story of Ivy, a pixie born without wings or the ability to fly. Ivy yearns to leave her home and learn to fly, but doing so could cost her her life. In walks Richard, a presumed spriggan who was captured by her people. Richard offers Ivy a deal. If she frees him, she’ll have a chance to get everything she desires: reuniting with the mother she thought was dead as well as learning how to fly. On the surface this book is an enjoyable and easy read. However, a deeper dive reveals some very mature social themes throughout. Anderson forays into issues of gender, discrimination, and even murder through the lens of the faeries. The story itself is complex and the plot continuously turns around. The characters are all relatable yet complex, ensuring that there is more than meets the eye, much like the story revolving around these characters. While this book is suitable for younger readers, older ones will also still be able to thoroughly enjoy the story and all of the issues covered throughout.
VERDICT A fast-paced story that will be enjoyed by those who love a little magic and a little faery, perfect for fans of Holly Black and Cornelia Funke.
