PreS-Gr 1—For the cherry twins, everything is a competition, no matter what. One day while they are buying ice cream, they see a poster for the "Super Sundae Event" and decide to enter to prove who is the best. It's not immediately clear what type of contest this is until the cherries form two teams with other food items and begin making themselves into sundaes. "Then the cherries remembered one minor detail. They were connected." The two teams agree to practice together, an important factor, as boy cherry is scared of heights and girl cherry can't swim, but supporting and encouraging each other, they both overcome their fears. As the contest draws nearer, they realize they don't want to separate, and plan one large sundae entry together and win the golden cone trophy. Using a combination of polymer clay, acrylic paint, pastel, wire, and a macro lens, Jimmy and Liz Reed bring their lifelike food dioramas, perfected in their webcomic, Cuddles and Rage, to a picture book setting. The text features simple sentences and dialogue balloons.
VERDICT Reminiscent of Terry Border's Peanut Butter & Cupcake, with a focus on sibling relationships and entertaining food puns, this title would be a good one-on-one read or read-aloud for older kids. The illustrations and puns make it ideal for starting to talk about wordplay.
