Gr 1-3–This Spanish-language picture book about a group of superhero grandmas is a fun, intergenerational story for families to read together. A group of Super Grandmas live in a secret house. Every weekend, their grandchildren come to visit. Some people question whether their superpowers are real, until a couple of burglars break in and each grandma uses her superpowers to fight them off. The first several pages of the book lists some of the grandmas with their secret names and superpowers, such as superabuela Carmen, whose superpower is to make magical croquettes that transport one to magical places, and superabuela Manuela, whose tender hugs finally subdue the cat burglars. The perpetrators then reject their criminal ways after encountering the super grandmothers. The charming mixed-media illustrations are detailed. Readers will find the colorful and energetic images pleasing to the eye. All the grandmas except for one have light skin; one of them is Black. Their grandchildren appear to be of different ethnic backgrounds.
VERDICT This Spanish-language picture book is a first purchase with a giggle-inducing twist on the “going to grandma’s house” story.
