K-Gr 3—In these attractive volumes, brief, clear instructions are illustrated with easy-to-follow, color photos. Each book starts with an introduction about the featured culture and then presents simple crafts inspired by it. The activities are well suited for primary-grade children, and the supplies needed are inexpensive and easily found at craft stores. Unfortunately, though the crafts are not difficult, they are also not always very authentic. For example, the first project in African Art is presented as a Kwanzaa celebration craft, yet Kwanzaa originated in America.
Simple, attractive crafts that children can make by themselves from ordinary materials in a few steps provide brief introductions to some cultural celebrations and symbols. West African kufi caps, Chinese dragon puppets, Mexican hojalatas, and American liberty headbands and torches are among the distinctive crafts presented; the volumes offer respectful ways to identify and enjoy a different world culture. Glos. Review covers these Super Simple Cultural Art titles: Super Simple African Art, Super Simple American Art, Super Simple Chinese Art, and Super Simple Mexican Art.
