Gr 2–4—While most kids dread report card day, Stink anticipates it as one of his favorite days of the year. Expecting all Os for Outstanding, Stink is devastated when he receives a U for Unsatisfactory in physical education. Stink isn't good at any sports, so gym just isn't his thing. He discovers thumb wrestling on his quest to find a sport he can handle. When he starts a thumb wrestling league at school, complete with thumb masks and wrestling names, Stink learns that he isn't great at this sport, either. Eventually, the boy turns to karate in the hope that it will help him improve his thumb wrestling technique. Through determination and practice, Stink is able to advance up to a yellow belt. With a controlled mind and superior attack skills, he's finally able to master thumb wrestling and defeat the champion. Listeners will love the funny phrases Stink uses, such as "bees in the knees." A lot of elementary school children will appreciate his struggle in gym class, as well as his knack for accidentally messing up. Barbara Rosenblat reads McDonald's chapter book (Candlewick, 2012) perfectly, with different voices for each character. She expresses Stink's emotions while reading his inner monologue, creating an instant connection with listeners.—Jenny Ventling, Dayton Metro Library, OH
