PreS-Gr 1—A hungry dog pines for a treat in this brightly illustrated picture book. Stanley, seeing a gigantic, delicious-smelling pie on a high shelf in the kitchen, begins to consider the best way to get it to the floor. After asking several unhelpful friends, such as a cat, spider, mouse, snail, and hedgehog, Stanley finally visits his wise friend Owl. "But Owl just hoots and says, 'Wait and see,' And Stanley goes to sleep, he's as tired as can be." Luckily Stanley's friends have a very special surprise for him the next morning. The rhyming is choppy at times, but the eye-catching, graphic-style illustrations make up for the few missteps. Each spread evokes a retro feel, and children will enjoy picking out the assortment of animals on each page.
VERDICT A fun addition, best for one-on-one sharing so children can enjoy the illustrations up close.
