Gr 2–5—Polisar and Clark offer 15 humorous short verses. In offerings like "Sweetlips Fish," "The Crocodile and the Gator," and "Puffer Fish," they focus on the zany, offbeat aspects of their subjects. Some of the poems are no more than snippets of verse, but the exaggerated cartoon illustrations strike just the right note. In "Amoeba," a pig-tailed girl gazes adoringly at the home of her "perfect pet." A bug-eyed gull licks his bill at a potential feast of horseshoe crabs. The poems are light and silly, with clunky-sounding rhymes, as in "Jellyfish…oh, yuck-/A nettlesome bunch of bad luck;/A tentacled thing that carries its sting/In a mass of gelatinous muck." Fans of Polisar's humor are unlikely to be deterred, though, as they giggle their way through this latest effort.—
