PreS-Gr 4–This addition to the “About…” series, which features a portrait of the mighty stag beetle on the cover, explores the ubiquitous “bug.” The text uses clear, concise language and draws in the young scientist a sentence at a time. The translation of the original English text facilitates the reader’s exploration and is easy to follow. The author and illustrator present a seamless collaboration as they expose the natural world to curious minds. The author, a former teacher, provides bite-sized facts. The illustrator, a biologist and artist, offers full-bleed visuals that highlight these arthropods. His well-composed images depict a snapshot of an insect’s life and help generate a form of respect for these oftentimes misunderstood creatures. An appendix provides more information regarding the featured insects. The bibliography and web links are English-only resources.
VERDICT This recommended beginner’s foray into the world of insects would be a welcome component to any STEAM curriculum—especially if paired with the English edition for bilingual language enrichment.
