Gr 3–5—This guide to girly and pink sleepover parties is unfortunately a party foul. The format presents a mix of practical party planning strategies and craft ideas. And while the strategies might be solid (Did you send out invitations? Where will the guests sleep?), most of the activities contain a problematic element—recipes for "mocktails" glamorize alcohol consumption, teepee and dreamcatcher crafts appropriate Native American culture, and the few hairstyle suggestions do not include ideas for girls with nonstraight, nonfine hair. Overall, this title seems incomplete—a quick throwing together of ideas. There are safety suggestions listed in the front and throughout the book, along with a warning to always involve parents in the planning and execution of the party.
VERDICT The bright pink and shiny design will attract readers, but beware of its troublesome elements.
