K-Gr 2–At first, this tale seems quite familiar. Princess Niamh (aka Brilliant) is cursed by a jilted fairy and fated to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her 15th birthday and fall into a deep enchanted sleep for 100 years. The kingdom is devastated, and the king and queen do everything in their power to keep this curse from coming true. On the day of her birthday, Brilliant pricks her finger and the spell, at first, is fulfilled. What the sleeping kingdom fails to realize is that not only is this princess brilliant, she’s also compassionate, curious, kind, smart, and quite a few steps ahead. With a complex, STEM-based plan up her sleeve, it turns out Princess Brilliant does not need to be saved by a prince, or by anyone else. Williams reimagines a classic fairy tale that gives readers a strong princess who is fully capable of creating her own happily ever after.
VERDICT A refreshing twist on a classic fairy tale, for every prince and princess out there who feels empowered to save themselves.
