Gr 4–9Graphics, detailed illustrations, and comparisons to a computer are utilized to introduce the parts and functions of the brain, including how it processes and stores information. The narrator is coupled with an age-appropriate student who asks questions throughout the presentation. The program is dry, short, and to the point, but it provides information that is clearly explained in a manner that viewers will comprehend. A major focus is an explanation of neurons, detailing the cell body, dendrites, and axons. Areas of the brain are highlighted and the complexity of the three-pound organ that controls the majority of our body's functions is explained. Important terms are defined and discussed. The effects of drug dependency and addiction on the brain are briefly addressed. While this program is not as exciting as others in the series, interesting and factual information make it worthy of consideration as an introduction to the study of the brain in middle and high schools.—Linda M. Teel, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC
