Gr 7 Up—When a child chooses to live a devout life, different from her parents, the results can challenge a family in unexpected ways. In this incisive documentary, written and directed by Lisa Kors, four teenage girls opt for an orthodox Jewish lifestyle, leaving their secular parents to try to keep harmony in the family. Ultra-orthodox Judaism requires a primary focus on prayer and HaShem (G-d), family, modest dress, gender separation, a strict Kosher diet, and more. Inside YULA high school in Los Angeles, Rabbi Hexter and other scholars lead a rigorous curriculum of religious and secular studies. Lively classroom scenes are juxtaposed against those of the girls and their parents trying to communicate differing views, often around the "shrine" of a Jewish family—the kitchen table. Love and hope for a fulfilled life pour from parents struggling to accept their daughters' orthodoxy. Ironically, Jewish identity is critical to everyone. These young female students find themselves "much happier now, deep in Judaism." The girls pray fervently, study, socialize, dance, sing, and clearly enjoy their religious rigors. Here, Jewish orthodoxy is demystified, impassioned family discussions unfold, and viewers gain an understanding of determined, thoughtful teens as they define themselves. An excellent choice for Jewish studies and discussions about self-determination.—
