Sexpectations: Sex Stuff Straight Up

Gr 7 Up—This stellar Aussie import exceeds all expectations. Teens can indeed find straight-up sex information with discussions of self-esteem, health, and societal norms neatly woven in among the facts. The book is written in flip-book format, divided by gender. Its positive, nonjudgmental outlook quickly puts readers at ease. Both authors are experienced, qualified professionals who clearly work with and relate to teens. Setting aside a little Aussie slang and measurements in centimeters, the writing is clear and accessible. Topics covered are standard fare, such as anatomy and safe sex, and a discussion of the emotions that surround sex is thoughtfully presented. Readers are also given information on body image, abusive relationships and termination, and pornography, and are encouraged to discover how they, not their peers, feel about these issues. Superb graphics, photos, and design elements are well suited to the target audience. Concise checklists, quizzes, and "Did You Know" boxes are scattered throughout, and a listing of books and websites for each gender is included. The recommended further reading is the only disappointment, featuring mostly older titles with boys likely to find only 3 of 11 titles readily available.
