Gr 5 Up–Set after the events of The Amber Spyglass, Pullman’s short novella finds teenage Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon, Pantalaimon, heading north to revisit Trollesund, the Arctic town where she first met the aeronaut Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, the armored bear. Their mission is to find and speak with the witch-consul, Dr. Lanselius, and hopefully find answers to their questions about their ability to separate. Olivia Colman’s narration is top-notch; here’s hoping audiobook fans have more of her readings to look forward to in the future.
VERDICT This short tale addresses a question many series fans have pondered. It will be a quick, gratifying listen for those already immersed in Pullman’s world.
