Gr 5–8—In Brandon Mull's sequel (2012) to World without Heroes (2011, both Aladdin), Jason returns to the alternate world of Lyrian and is in more danger than ever. After he discovers that the magical word is ineffective against the Maldor, the evil emperor, Jason sets out to find Galloran, the blind king, and his friend, Rachel, in order to warn them. He crosses paths with Maldor's servant, Ferrin, who claims he has switched sides and seeks to join the rebellion, but Jason isn't sure if he can be trusted. Meanwhile, Rachel and Drake, the seedman the friends met in the previous book, have made their own progress. While attempting to find a magical charmwoman who'll help them escape one of Maldor's stalking shadow creatures, Rachel discovers that she has magical powers. Can she learn to control and use them in the rebellion? Can Rachel, Drake, Galloran, and Jason find each other in time to stop Maldor? Can Ferrin be trusted? Although his narrative style doesn't change to indicate action throughout the book, Jeremy Bobb's reading is crisp and clear. His use of different voices masterfully captures each character's personality and quirks while drawing listeners into Lyrian. Those familiar with the first title will enjoy this action-filled fantasy.—Kira Moody, Whitmore Public Library, Salt Lake City, UT
