K-Gr 2—Slightly insecure, but totally lovable Splat the cat is back for another fun-filled adventure. This time he must use his investigative skills and his spy kit to solve the mystery of missing toy ducks. When he and his friend Seymour the mouse discover the culprit and his true motives, they all work together to create a happy ending. As with the rest of the series, the bright, bold, highly textured, expressive illustrations, filled with comical details, are the true appeal. While some of the humor—like Splat's names for his ducks—John, Paul, Ringo, and George—and his detective badge 003½—might be lost on some readers, others will certainly be amused, and fans of the previous five stories will enjoy helping Splat solve his first case.—Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL
Splat discovers that someone is tampering with his toy duck collection: each day a duck goes missing; the next it's returned--without a beak. To solve the mystery, he transforms into Secret Agent Splat. He nabs the culprit, only to discover that all is not what it seems. The humorous series' recognizable illustrations pair its fluffy cat with a collection of kooky wooden ducks.
