K-Gr 2–While spending a summer on a small island off the coast of Maine, Thomas and his grandmother search the beach for treasures. Along with the many seashells and rocks, they find a beautiful piece of green sea glass. Grandmother tells Thomas how sea glass happens to be in the ocean and how the constant motion of the sea and its currents polish the glass until it no longer looks like the glass we know. That night Thomas dreams about a boat christening where a bottle of champagne is smashed against the prow of the ship and the green shards fall into the ocean below. The sea offers up another piece of sea glass, this time with the letters S-O-N. Later he dreams of a shipwreck where the boat’s contents fall to the ocean floor and are whisked away by the sea. Thomas himself contributes to the amount of sea glass in the ocean when he drops his grandfather’s magnifying glass and it shatters. Sadly, he picks up the pieces and throws them overboard. Many years later, a young girl finds a beautiful piece of sea glass on that very same island and brings it to her grandfather, Paw Paw Tom. This last piece is oddly familiar. The dream sequences are especially effective as the art shifts to a more ethereal monotone and the font is italicized.
VERDICT The watercolors are beautifully rendered and the imaginative story makes this a book a strong addition for any collection
