PreS-Gr 2—Jeremy is a young frog who is afraid of the dark. When the sun sets, he and his parents share a cozy bedtime ritual. But when the lights go out, Jeremy hears "scritch, scratch, scraww, plop!" and heads for his parents' bedroom. At last, Jeremy's dad hears the same thing, and so together father and son go outside to find out where the noise is coming from. Soon, they learn that the "scritch, scratch, scraww, plop!" is caused by other pond inhabitants. Jeremy is no longer afraid of the dark as he and his dad curl up on a lily pad for a good night's sleep with night noises all around. Illustrations, which appear to be colored pencil, provide a soft, cozy atmosphere, successfully presenting a watery world at nighttime.
VERDICT Though the idea is not particularly original, this is a fine addition to the canon of books to soothe nighttime fears.
