PreS-Gr 1—On Christmas Eve, Mrs. Claus is sick, so Santa has to wash his own suit, accidentally using purple paint instead of soap. He heads off to deliver presents, but the purple suit makes everything go inexplicably wonky: trees and snowmen are upside down, his elves turn into seven-foot trolls, and his reindeer, now blue, have odd names like Corkal, Flieber, and Duckson. It turns out to be a nightmare, and this nonsensical story ends with the highly dubious moral "…Santa should stick to the things that he knows, and should not be allowed to wash his own clothes." The illustrations are rather charming but do not redeem this slight tale.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
