Gr 1-3–Sabby was a playful sea otter pup. He spent most of his day with his mother in a lagoon. She taught him how to hunt for food and to survive. To get from their lagoon to the ocean, sometimes they needed to navigate a dangerous culvert pipe. One day, Sabby got too close to the pipe and the current sucked him through and out into the ocean. Sabby’s mother took the hazardous journey to rescue her pup, who was all alone. The book features lovely photographs taken by the author. Back matter includes a glossary, an author’s note, and sea otter facts. Glossary words are boldfaced throughout the text. The writing can be a little awkward at times, but older children should find it easy to read.
VERDICT A cute tale that is perfect for libraries where true animal tales are popular.
