Gr 7 Up-Ruby attends the Beacon Academy, where she is training to be a huntress, fight monsters called Grimm, and protect the world of Remnant. She is part of a team of girls called RWBY, after their first names (Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang). Sometimes the story is told through fight scenes without dialogue; other scenes are filled with exposition. The visuals are appealing. Combat sequences are sprinkled with imaginative sound effects, and action spills out over multiple panels and pages. The most memorable parts of the narrative focus on the backstories of the girls. However, those unfamiliar with the web series upon which this manga is based may be perplexed by the plot and characters' motivations and abilities.
VERDICT Fans of the RWBY web series will most appreciate this in-depth look at the characters, while curious newcomers might be encouraged to seek out the source material.-Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library
