Gr 9 Up—In 2010, high school runner Holland Reynolds collapsed as she approached the finish line of the California State Division 5 Cross-Country Championship, but the determination instilled in her by her coach inspired her to crawl to the finish line. She and her teammates had decided that they had to "Run for Jim," their coach, Jim Tracy. He enjoyed his own success as a runner in high school and even more as a coach, only to be diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. The documentary chronicles his life as his body slowly shuts down and he can no longer walk. The story is told through interviews with Jim, his athletes, and his doctors as well as through scenes of Jim in action while coaching and doing his best to adjust. Even at points when the action lags, there is plenty to be inspired by; Tracy never complains about his situation. His runners do plenty for him, especially after they learn that he is basically homeless. With his old-school style, Tracy offers his runners honesty in a manner that audiences will admire. Viewers will be left hopeful—he was diagnosed in June 2010 and has continued to coach. Many will find themselves Googling his name to learn if he is still coaching. This film could be paired with the book
