RedReviewStarGr 9 Up—To describe this documentary as eye-opening would be a complete understatement. Its use of expert testimony and vivid footage brings an important issue to light. Director and narrator Rob Stewart takes viewers on a journey of discovery. At first, Stewart explains his love of the ocean and how he was inspired to make his first film, Sharkwater, which led him on a four-year search in 15 different countries for answers to how to solve the environmental crisis. The response that Rob found was always the same: humans must change how we treat this planet before it is too late. It's not just the polar bears and coral reefs that are at risk but our own lives as well. This message is communicated through stunning footage that reveals two sides to the global environment. Images of colorful coral reefs and underwater life are followed by the visual shock of coral graveyards. For every beautiful scene, there is one of utter devastation. The message is clear: ocean acidification, climate change, species extinction, and environmental pollution are killing the planet and will also kill us. This concept is shocking all on its own, but Stewart pushes the issue further and reveals that though solutions are available and attainable, world politicians have failed to implement new energy policies.
VERDICT This film is important, inspirational, and at times devastating. Be aware that some footage, such as a shark slaughter, is disturbing and graphic.
