Gr 9 Up—This final book sees Maryam under the control of the dangerous Apostle once again. As her own life is in jeopardy for speaking out against the ruling class, she struggles to get the islanders to rally to their shared cause. With strong themes about racial and religious oppression and social justice, this series offers a well-constructed dystopia featuring issues that are all too realistic. Thought-provoking and action-packed.
Maryam returns to her Australasian island home with medicine she hopes will unseat the corrupt theocracy whose rule she fled in the trilogy's first book. This series-closer continues to tackle themes of colonialism, racism, and exploitation against the backdrop of a near-future dystopia rocked by environmental disaster. Purple prose sometimes distorts emotional impact, but depth of theme, character, and setting carry the book.
