K-Gr 2—This book is billed as a "memory-boosting adventure." Explorer Ben loves to travel the world. He always comes prepared, but also has the unfortunate habit of running into the sort of trouble where his things disappear. This is where readers come in. On the bottom three-quarters of each spread, readers are asked to memorize 10 labeled items using the suggested method, then figure out which ones are missing on the next pages. The difficulty level increases each time, but thanks to the book's effective and easy-to-understand memory tricks (all of which are taken from the work of psychologist Dr. Tracy Packiam Alloway), kids of all ages can participate and have fun. Every list includes a similar set of items in order to facilitate the process and alleviate potential frustration for the youngest readers. Additional tips are included in the back for parents wishing to further improve their child's memory. To wrap things up, the creators added one final game, a "Marvelous Memory Quiz" that reflects back on the adventure. This book requires effort, so it is best read at times and in situations where a child is focused and receptive to guidance.
VERDICT A fun and effective guide to techniques meant to improve one's memory. It is best shared one-on-one but has great potential for giving children one of the essential tools needed to do well in school.
