K-Gr 2—In this light-hearted modern twist on a classic fairy tale, Cinderella and her fairy-tale counterparts are the grandparents of a new generation of characters. In the first of three episodes, "A School for Fairy Tales," blonde and blue-eyed Rose Cinderella discovers she is more than a regular teen. In an unusual series of events, she is unable to resist the temptation of a shoe store while on her way to school, and a cute little mouse falls into her boot as she tries on shoes. The furry rodent has a key in its mouth that he drops while running away. After exiting the shoe store in an Alice in Wonderland—like twist, Rose discovers the key opens the door to a magical world and Regal Academy. The other episodes, "The Great Dragon Race" and "The Swan in Swamp Lake," involve action-packed adventures that focus on teamwork. The bright computer animation is well done and conveys the magic of these stories, such as when Rose Cinderella rides the dragon when entering Regal Academy. These princesses aren't waiting for the prince in shining armor to save them; these clever characters work together to solve problems.
VERDICT A good choice for libraries in need of fairy-tale stories for elementary school youth or families looking for entertainment.
