Gr 1–3—From astronauts to the popular football team Zenit, this book escorts readers through 26 engaging snapshots of Russian life, history, and culture. The entries, each accompanied by a color photograph, assume the role of tour guide, making readers feel like insiders. "Our most famous kremlim is in Moscow....Inside, you will see some wonderful churches…." While the text exhibits pride in Russian achievements ("Many Russian gymnasts have become Olympic champions"), it steers clear of jingoism; the author's note at the beginning of the book is welcoming and warm. Though this title is of particular interest to those about to travel through Russia, any young student intrigued by or learning about other nations will enjoy this delightful ABC.—Rebecca Dash Donsky, New York Public Library
