PreS-Gr 3—Evy doesn't see the nonsensical events happening around her, because she is intent on her own activities. In finely detailed, colorful illustrations, riotous scenes pass unnoticed by our busy heroine, such as cows strolling down Main Street in fancy hats, donkeys sailing through the sky in boats, and barnyard animals playing badminton. The story takes viewers through spring, summer, and fall, culminating with the farm animals sitting down to a feast as Evy tends to the oven. At this point, the action stops and narrator Susie Berneis asks, "What was Evy doing?" Next, Evy's activities are shown so that viewers can concentrate on her actions. This provides an opportunity for stopping the video to question viewers on exactly what she is doing and why. She weeds, hoes, and ties up bean vines, among other things. Viewers are likely to want to view the video again immediately, to locate Evy as she performs her tasks. Several bars of string music repeat throughout, and animal sounds enhance the experience.
VERDICT This video is an entertaining choice for Thanksgiving and other harvest celebrations—a delightful combination of whimsy and reality.
