Gr 2—6—In this episode of the series featuring a puffin named Puffer who learns about different aspects or types of art, Polly teaches Puffer about ceramics. Featuring bright animation, Puffer is introduced to various ways artists use clay. There are clear and simple demonstrations of different techniques—clay slabs, pinch pots, coil pots, and clay thrown on a potter's wheel. The history of ceramic art is briefly examined and viewers learn where clay comes from. The use of ceramics in art, decoration, building, and pottery is discussed. Terms are defined in context. What is particularly good about the production is that, once a technique has been explained, photographs of ceramic artwork are shown so viewers see the technique applied. They also learn how multiple techniques can be used in the same piece of art. The program ends with examples of children's ceramic artwork, again emphasizing the procedures used. This clear, interesting presentation would be a terrific resource to introduce students to ceramics, especially if they are about to create their own clay artwork. If your school has a kiln, this is a must-have.—Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA
