This collection of 41 vignettes briefly explores the complicated political, social, and economical history of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican community. In the wake of Hurricane María, this anthology aims to educate readers and raise awareness of the impact of the disaster (proceeds from the book's sale will go to relief efforts); the bond of the Puerto Rican diaspora, or lack thereof, to the island; and the consequences of colonialism in recovery efforts. Poetic texts and full-color comics in a variety of styles and genres (fantasy, sci-fi, history, testimonios) fill the pages. The signs, backgrounds, graffiti, names, and slogans throughout are a testament to this title's authenticity. While the volume tries to portray the resistance of Puerto Ricans since the Spanish colonization, some entries romanticize the Taíno Indians' resistance and history, and there's a lack of resistance stories centered on enslaved Africans and black Puerto Ricans. Still, this effective examination of Puerto Rico's complex history reminds readers that there are still those feeling the effects of the hurricane and whose basic needs are unmet. The vibrant images and honest stories encourage readers to visit Puerto Rico and acknowledge the power of collaboration and the support of the diaspora and allies.
VERDICT A great addition to graphic novel collections and an introduction to the work of several Puerto Rican and Latinx writers and artists.
