Prom

Gr 7—10—This novelization of a Disney movie has everything you'd expect—love lost and found, something horrible turned into a blessing in disguise, and happy endings. Nova, an all-around perfect student and head of the prom committee, is preparing for her school's big night, and with only three weeks left to go, has yet to be asked. She's hoping that super perfect Brandon will sweep her off her feet, but when he asks if they can carpool, she's nothing short of disappointed. Enter said tragedy—the decorations go up in flames, and the committee has nothing left to show for their months of work. When the school rebel with a heart of gold, Jesse, is recruited by the principal to help Nova make all new decorations, she is at first incensed but soon learns that there might be more to this bad boy than leather and a motorcycle. The book also follows the stories of "It" couple Tyler and Jordan, whose storybook romance is anything but, and Justin and Mei, the couple who already have their future together planned—or do they? Other funny side stories include the plight of Lloyd, who's desperately trying to find a date, and best friends Lucas and Corey, who are trying to stay friends as they ultimately are growing up and apart. Although the character development is weak, the interlocking stories are fun and will keep readers interested until the end.
