PreS-Gr 1—This series title focuses on short "i" sounds. Coxe has created beautiful scenes with positioned, well-dressed stuffed animals, and a variety of props. Pig (a pig) and Twig (a mouse) are playing Princess. First Pig is the princess making wishes that Twig brings to fruition: lipstick, a picnic—complete with basket, shrimp, and cream cheese sandwiches—and a magic trick. After her three wishes, Pig refuses to change places and let Twig be princess. Twig grants Pig three more wishes—still using that short "i." When Twig asks again to be princess, Pig refuses once more, and so there is a bit of drama. Twig heads off, Pig misses Twig, and so there are apologies and new wishes for Twig. Early readers will pore over the pictures enjoying each little detail. As an unusual approach to easy readers, with photos of real stuffed animals and their accessories, this is new and interesting series. The fact that the phonics are highlighted in such an obvious way should not be a turnoff.
VERDICT Parents and teachers can use these titles for reading as well as writing activities.
