Gr 1-2–Part of the “Follow My Food” series, this highly colorful introduction to the life and work of honeybees is an excellent beginning science work showing young readers the origins of the jar of honey in their cupboard. A young brown-skinned girl follows worker bees through their nectar and pollen gathering, and back to the hive to feed the baby bees and add to the comb. She sees the drones and the Queen bee, whose only job is to lay more eggs. A beekeeper takes care of the hive helped by the narrator. And finally she can enjoy a snack of the delicious honey. The need to help bees by planting bee-friendly flowers and increasing their habitat is emphasized. The simple main text is followed by a game that brings together the information previously offered.
VERDICT A colorful and simple introduction to the life and work of the bees that give us honey. Useful for early science classes.
