K-Gr 6—For their fifth album, Virginia-based band Rocknoceros makes good on their promise to perform a song for every state in the union. Every original song on this concept album features a different state or region of the United States. Titles include "Squeakers" (about visiting Wisconsin), "The Sunshine State" (celebrating Florida), "Colorado Rockies," "Tennessee," "Aloha," "Mississippi River" (which mentions many states along the river), and "I've Got Friends in New Jersey." "Down by the Riverside" is an original tune about what it is like to live down by the riverside, not the well-known spiritual. Closing the recording are remasters of "Texas," "O-H-I-O," and "South Dakota." Also included is the group's spin on Irving Berlin's "God Bless America."
VERDICT A variety of musical styles, tight harmonies, and pleasing musical arrangements are given a broad sprinkling of humor, making this a useful addition to social studies classes studying the United States.
