Gradually, their competitiveness turns to camaraderie as they encounter an artist wielding an eraser—threatening their very existence! The artist provides the birds with some art supplies, and, working together, they are able not only to redraw themselves but also turn the book's plain white backgrounds into a frosty polar field of icebergs and open sea. The illustrations are crisp and clear and realistically rendered.
VERDICT Part of a four-book series, these interactive stories will appeal to young children and art teachers.

Ping and Pong the penguins are each miffed about having another penguin in his book until they sketch a new setting together. Rudy the reindeer wants the artist to draw him a forest but gets a city, boat, train, and, ultimately, a jolly friend instead. While these stories are slight, the meta interactions are entertaining and the dialogue simple and funny. Review covers these titles: Ping and Pong the Penguins and Rudy the Reindeer.
