K-Gr 2–Piney is a pine tree grown from seed, in the winter, by a little girl named Georgie and her dog, Jackster. Over a period of four years, Georgie, Grandpa, and Jackster watch Piney grow into what they know will be the perfect Christmas tree. Piney wears a red-and-white scarf to show he’s earmarked as Georgie’s special tree. But when he briefly takes it off one day to warm up little Georgie against the winter cold while she gets some tea, Piney is whisked away with other trees destined for a Christmas tree lot. Piney hopes he’ll at least be picked up by a family to be fully decorated for the holidays. Meanwhile, Georgie, Jackster, and Grandpa set off in search of Piney. The story becomes an adventure for everyone. When Piney finally does make his way back to Georgie, having just missed Christmas, Grandpa comes up with a wonderful idea for how to make Piney last a lifetime. Illustrations are the same as in the Emmy-nominated Christmas special the book is based on. Main characters are white and live in Europe.
VERDICT A heartwarming purchase for all libraries. This talking evergreen—with his kindness, optimism, and energy—is sure to be a hit with students around the holidays.
