PreS-Gr 3—Peter H. Reynolds's lovely illustrations, filled with vibrant colors, return in this reissued collection of three of his most loved works. Children will watch as Vashti, Ramon, and Marisol explore the world of art. Vashti struggles to learn how to draw and paint, but she finally gains confidence in herself through the help of her teacher. Ramon's frustrations are equally clear, but his loving and admiring sister gives him the inspiration he needs. Finally, Marisol's colorful world is brought to life after she runs out of blue to paint the sky—and she creates an entirely new, magical color. Narrators give unique, crisp voices to the characters, and a beautiful score accompanies every scene and flows perfectly with the animation. Bonus material adds to the excellent quality of this collection, including an interview with the author and a learning guide with summaries of the stories, objectives to use in the classroom, and before- and after-viewing activities which can be used to discuss the themes of the stories and to learn more about art and artists.
VERDICT This collection would be ideal for art units. Highly recommended.
