Gr 5 Up—Pet owners vary as much as their pets, but the one thing that they all have in common is their attachment to their critters. This program not only captures the loving devotion that pet owners in Ireland have for their animals but also highlights the unique and sometimes eccentric habits of these individuals. Each of the six segments highlights different animals and owners. The first introduces a young couple who spend their time and money raising five dogs, preparing them for competitive dog shows. Not only do their pets get spa treatments and eat the best dog foods but they also have extensive wardrobes for any climate. One woman profiled believes she can communicate with animals, and she demonstrates with dogs, horses, and pigs. Viewers learn that in Ireland, residents focus on their pets so much that "doggie day cares" are as common as childcare centers. One such manager shares the daily boarders' typical routine of care and activities, which includes naptime. Other pets featured in this TV series are donkeys, llamas, hedgehogs, birds, and rats (a pet shop proprietor confirms that rats are popular for those who do not have a large space for a dog or cat but desire company).
VERDICT While this film may be a bit entertaining and somewhat informative in parts, as a whole, it might best serve students in public libraries who are interested in animal care and training.
