PreS-K—Peddles is a pig with a sweetly inquisitive, alert expression and lots of big ideas. He's always thinking, even when he's eating, sleeping, or pooping. But it's his dreams that really set him apart from others of his kind. The pigs tell him to get his head out of the clouds and to stop being so spacey. One starry lavender night, he overhears a barn dance and knows what he has to do. Dancing doesn't come naturally, but with patience, persistence, and a little help from his friends, Peddles brings his dream to fruition. Young readers will find his gentle drama quietly wonderful, and Stanton's lovely pencil and watercolor illustrations are a thing of beauty (especially Peddles's red cowboy boots).
VERDICT Peddles should find a cozy place in most picture book collections.

Watching a hoedown, Peddles--whose "big ideas" are dismissed by the other pigs--is inspired to dance. The red cowboy boots he finds don't impart skill, but his repeated efforts inspire the other pigs to help. Sitting amid generous white space, gently detailed watercolor and pencil vignettes of Peddles's ideas, both imagined and attempted, adds heart and humor to this different-thinking pig's story.
