Gr 1–4—Natalie S. Bober's charming picture book biography (Holt, 2013) of Robert Frost is told through the eyes of his oldest daughter, Lesley. She recalls the family's life on a New England poultry farm and the time they spent together exploring the farmland and surrounding woods. From lazy Sunday picnics by the brook to long walks in the meadow, a love of the outdoors inspired the family's daily life. Lesley also describes evenings spent reading aloud from favorite books and poems and her father's passion for language. Narrator Ammi-Joan Paquette perfectly captures the story's delicate theme of the discovery of the world around you and the power of words and their sounds. It also introduces and explains concepts such as metaphor, offering examples from Frost's own poems.
VERDICT This DVD will make a suitable supplement to poetry lessons. It could also be used in a social studies lesson about famous Americans, since it does a beautiful job of introducing Frost to the youngest students.
