Gr 3-7–Readers are treated to a comprehensive look at all things panda, ranging from facts about their biology and habitat to human impact and history. Encyclopedic information is divided into chapters and segments, similar to a textbook. The chapters are thorough and interspersed with visual time lines, crafts, and activities. Although the content is dense, the book’s high-quality photos will maintain reader interest. Of special note is the photo-illustrated time line of a baby panda’s first year, which is both adorable and informative. The glossary and index are both extensive, but further reading contains only four resources, three of which are websites.
VERDICT The authors do a good job of leveraging the purely aesthetic appreciation of pandas to fully engage readers in the text. Perfect for school libraries, this book was made for research projects
